SSL Certificate Secure

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. SSL Certificates are the digital certificates serve as the backbone of internet security. These are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organization’s details. An organization needs to install the SSL Certificate onto its web server to initiate a secure session with browsers. Once a secure connection is established, all web traffic between the web server and the web browser will be secure. It is used to establish an encrypted connection between a website and an internet browser. SSL Certificates are typically installed on pages that require end-users to submit sensitive information over the internet like credit card details or passwords and pages like payment pages, online forms, and login pages.

When a certificate is successfully installed on a web server, the application protocol HTTP will change to HTTPs, where the ‘S’ stands for ‘secure’, a browser will show a padlock or green bar in the browser when you visit a website that has an SSL Certificate installed.

SSL Certificate is today an industry standard that is used by millions of websites worldwide to protect all communication and data that’s transmitted online through the websites.

To create a secure connection, an SSL is installed on a web server and serves two functions:

  • It authenticates the identity of the website (this guarantees visitors that they’re not on a bogus site)
  • It encrypts the data that’s being transmitted

Why SSL Certificate?

SSL Certificate

SSL Certificates protect your sensitive information and,

  • Keeps data secure between servers
  • It Increases Google Rankings
  • Builds customer trust
  • It Improves conversion rates
  • Cost and convenience
  • Fastest Issuance and load times
  • Strongest encryption
  • Improved SEO and Google Rankings
  • Increased conversions with site seal
  • Access to free tools and Platforms

Any computer in between you and the server can see your credit card numbers, usernames and passwords, and other sensitive information if it is not encrypted with an SSL certificate because data transferred in plain-text form or in a non-encrypted format. Transactions performed online may involve submitting personal information such as social security numbers, usernames, and passwords. Cybercriminals who intercept unencrypted communications will gain full access to this data and can use it for fraudulent activities.

When an SSL certificate is used, the information becomes unreadable to everyone except for the server you are sending the information to. SSL certificates are what make a website trusted. Organizations must use an SSL certificate to secure their site if they wish to take online payments or expect their visitors to submit confidential information. Apart from building essential trust and security into your website, SSL certificates also help with SEO efforts now that Google is providing a ranking boost for pages that are served over https.

Any individual or organization that uses their website to require, receive, process, collect, store, or display confidential or sensitive information.

Some examples are:

  • logins and passwords
  • financial information (e.g., credit card numbers, bank accounts)
  • personal data (e.g., names, addresses, social security numbers, birth dates)
  • legal documents and contracts
  • client lists

How does an SSL work?

https

The server requests that the Web server identify itself. The Web server sends the server a copy of its SSL certificate. A server sends a copy of its SSL Certificate, including the server’s public key. The Web server sends back a digitally signed acknowledgment to start an SSL encrypted session. After the secure connection is made, the session key is used to encrypt all transmitted data. Browser connects to a website secured with https

SSL Certificates use public key cryptography. This particular kind of cryptography harnesses the power of two keys which are randomly generated numbers. One is called a private key and one is called a public key. A public key is known to your server and available in the public domain. It is used to encrypt any message. If Arun is sending a message to Rohan, Arun will lock it with Rohan’s public key but the only way it can be decrypted is to unlock it with Rohan’s private key. Rohan is the only one who has his private key so Rohan is the only one who can use this to unlock Arun’s message. If a hacker intercepts the message before Rohan unlocks it, all they will get is a cryptographic code that they cannot break, even with the power of a computer.

If the communication is happening between a website and a server. Your website and server are Arun and Rohan.

There are four visual clues how visitors know that the site has an SSL Certificate:-

  1. Padlock to the left of a URL
  2. https URL prefix instead of HTTP
  3. A trust seal
  4. A green address bar (when an EV SSL certificate is issued)

  1. Standard SSL
  2. EV SSL
  3. Multi-Domain SSL
  4. Wildcard SSL

I recommend adopting Cloudflare Certificate to protect your website. It improves the performance of sites with minimal configuration.

When a user tries to visit your site, without a CDN, they make a connection with your web host servers. Those servers find the data they’re requesting and serve it to the visitor. This is good and perfectly functional for people.

Cloudflare protects your site by filtering out bad requests and only referring the good requests, which allows your server to respond much more quickly.
Cloudflare’s free SSL in Full SSL mode are the only options to properly secure the connection between the client & your server.
