How does an SSL work?


The server requests that the Web server identify itself. The Web server sends the server a copy of its SSL certificate. A server sends a copy of its SSL Certificate, including the server’s public key. The Web server sends back a digitally signed acknowledgment to start an SSL encrypted session. After the secure connection is made, the session key is used to encrypt all transmitted data. Browser connects to a website secured with https

SSL Certificates use public key cryptography. This particular kind of cryptography harnesses the power of two keys which are randomly generated numbers. One is called a private key and one is called a public key. A public key is known to your server and available in the public domain. It is used to encrypt any message. If Arun is sending a message to Rohan, Arun will lock it with Rohan’s public key but the only way it can be decrypted is to unlock it with Rohan’s private key. Rohan is the only one who has his private key so Rohan is the only one who can use this to unlock Arun’s message. If a hacker intercepts the message before Rohan unlocks it, all they will get is a cryptographic code that they cannot break, even with the power of a computer.
